Where your Claude Code budget goes.

An interactive coding session can involve more work than its visible messages suggest. Repeated context, tool results, and debugging attempts all belong in the cost picture.

01

Understand your billing mode

Check whether your setup uses a subscription allowance or API billing. Verify current limits and usage reporting for that mode. A credit balance for one product should not be assumed to fund the other.

02

Give the session a useful scope

Describe the objective, relevant files, and how success will be verified. Start a fresh task when old context no longer helps. Large, unfocused sessions can spend time and tokens exploring work you did not need.

03

Track outcomes, not just tokens

Compare completed changes and review time with spend per developer. Put a limit around exploratory tasks and make expensive loops visible. Test whether a lower-cost model can handle routine work before changing the default for difficult changes.
